His skills were acquired initially from his paternal great grandfather with contributions from uncles and aunts from his mothers side of the family. Even though his father knew nothing about hunting and very little about fishing he and his older brothers chores were to hunt and fish in order to provide for the families meals. This consisted of squirrels, rabbits, quail, deer, ferrel hogs and razorbacks. Initially he learned to shoot from his great grandfather on a Weatherby .243 his dad provided him and his older brother with a Remington .22 and a pistol pellet gun; these were much more economical to use and would bring down what ever they hunted with a correctly placed shot.
