S.A.R.D.

This qualification is required by several individuals aboard US Navy ships that carry airplanes and helicopters. Completing the course for this certification includes pilot rescue and water survival. Needless to say passing this certification meets the physical fitness requirement for B.U.D.S.

In the water survival and pilot rescue is a very arduous two week course culminating in the passing of three test. First one is to swim, in a pool, with mask fins and snorkel one mile in 30 minutes and under. Second one is to swim, in a pool, with clothing on, except shoes, one mile in 30 minutes and under. And the last test is to be dropped off, by a helicopter, two miles from shore with mask, fins, snorkel, and wet suit and swim to the shore using a compass. Of course there was no time limit but an escort boat could retrieve you at any time.
